TRANSFORMATION OF WORK AND WORKPLACES AMID THE PANDEMIC

The world is going through a transformation, of sorts. Our workplaces are locked, and the study table at home, which once was used after office hours for leisure reading, has now become our permanent workstation. A direct impact of the spread of Coronavirus and the resulting pandemic is that it has altered the way we function socially and professionally.

As far as business organizations are concerned, the management is taking a serious look at how the work-from-home model can become a prolonged and a more efficient way to function in the normal course of life. The effect of the pandemic is expected to have a long-term impact in terms of laying more stress on overall well-being of the employees and making office spaces or buildings more conducive for the workers.

The pandemic may, well, be the time for amending the way businesses function. The change that we see today may soon become the regular way of life at work tomorrow.

FOCUS ON HEALTH

There is no doubt that the well-being of the employees has a direct relation to their productivity. The focus on giving employees a conducive work environment was already witnessing a rise. But now, the demand for green buildings will also increase. Within the buildings, features such as indoor air quality and appropriate ventilation will be given due importance and in turn, the employees will get to work in a much more health-focussed environment.

HARD AND SOFT FACILITY MANAGEMENT WILL BE AT THE CENTRE OF BUSINESSES

Since the focus will shift to health, devising healthcare schemes and better management of office facilities will become the need of the hour. Cleanliness and proper sanitization of office spaces will be the priority for facility managers. Shared spaces such as conference rooms, cafeterias, reception and washrooms will be regularly disinfected and monitored, so as to maintain a hygienic and healthy environment.

FLEXIBLE OFFICE SPACES AND FLEXIBLE POLICIES

The employers that were once hesitant to include work-from-home policies are now looking at it as a boon. At a time when people are urged to stay-at-home, the economic scenario for every country has changed for the worse. The work-from-home model, wherever implemented, is a saving grace for organizations, especially for industries where the employee needs a laptop and an internet connection to carry out their daily tasks. This will, in turn, promote the adoption of flexible workspaces, even for large companies.

MINIMISE DISRUPTIONS AND BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING

The sudden and rapid spread of the Coronavirus and the measure taken to contain it via social distancing has given rise to the need for having a special task force at organizations. This means that a team will be put in charge of planning a strategy to deal with such kind of emergencies, if the need be. Their plan of action would include ways to minimise business disruptions, ensure continuity while maintaining back-up for major business functions.

One global pandemic has changed our way of life, for now. Crisis management just got a whole new meaning and the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle has gotten its due credit. This will, hopefully, transform organisations and businesses for good and will bring to the fore the importance of quality over quantity.
